Incomes of intelligence-based businesses surpass those of manufacturing businesses in Zhongguangcun Science and Technology Park for the first time

In the first half of this year, the total sales volume of high-tech and intelligence-based services industry in Zhongguancun Science and Technology Park has surpassed that of the manufacturing industry. Yesterday a reporter got the information from the Administrative Committee of Zhongguancun Science and Technology Park that, because of the pulling effect of information service industry, R&D service industry and cultural originality industry, the total revenue of high-tech service businesses of the park had reached 142.58 billion Yuan in the first part of this year, with overtopping that of the manufacturing industry by more than 16 billion Yuan. This is the first time in the record of Zhongguancun Science and Technology Park.

High-tech services industry has stronger potential to increase value

“Compared to manufacturing industry, high-tech services industry has stronger potential to increase value.” An official in the committee said. Although in the first part of the year, the total investment volume in the park has decreased by 48.4% compared to the same period of last year, investment on R&D for key industries has seen a growth rate of more than 30%. Sales incomes of new products also have gained a growth rate of 44.51%, it is 18 percentage higher than the average level of the park. All these signs are showing that innovation is becoming a major driving force for the development of Zhongguancun.

A quarterly report about economy situation of Zhongguancun Park shows several facts. In the second quarter of this year, the park has maintained a good momentum of quick growth. The technical incomes have increased by 35.7% compared to the same period of last year, which is much faster than the overall growth rate. The quality of business operations has been improved tremendously, and the employment has developed at a rapid speed, and the high-tech services industry is becoming a good channel for employment. In the upcoming years, the park will mainly support high-tech services industries such as software development outsourcing, digital content, integrated circuit design and test, multi-media terminal design, research and development of biomedical science, technology advisory and etc., and then these will make the position of self-innovations increasingly go up.

High-tech services industry contributes 73.6% of the income growth of the park

Four companies in the park including Founder from Beijing University, the Student, Superstar and Chinese Online have already made a digital integration of 570 national publishing companies and more than 120 million books. They have occupied more than 90% of the domestic electronic book market shares. This is only a representative example of the quick development in high-tech services industry of Zhongguancun.

According to statistics, Zhongguancun gained a total revenue of 288.513 billion Yuan from January to May this year, which is 80.937 billion Yuan more than the same period of 2006. Among those added values, 59.538 billion was brought by the high-tech services industry; it occupied 73.6% of the total added values. Apparently the high-tech services industry has become the strongest engine for the development of Zhongguancun’s economy.

Four features of the high-tech services industry in Zhongguancun

“High-tech services industry covering the fields of software, information services, and cultural originality is in a comprehensive and fast development in Zhongguancun.” Experts from the Research Centre of Zhongguancun in Beijing Social Science Academy point out that, high-tech services industry of Zhongguancun has already formed the following four features: 1. competitive industries develop fast; 2. self-innovation ability strengthens increasingly; 3. collective development emerges obviously; 4. industrial associating promotion affects obviously.
　　
It is said that at the perspective of superior industries’ development, the increased market value of China mobile is 11.7 billion Yuan in 2006. Of the top 8 market contributors, 4 have set up their headquarters in Zhongguancun---Air Network, Sina, Sohu and Netease. And Tencent and Linktone from the other four have also set up filiales in the park. From the perspective of innovating ability, Zhongguancun now has 19 industrial alliances including the IGRS Industry Alliance, Godson Industry Alliance, TD-SCDMA Industry Alliance and etc. Among those alliances, the IGRS standard which is in the frontfore has passed the ISO project adopted by the International Organization for Standardization, and 33 of 204 patents have been authorized by patent offices of the United States, Japan, Europe, India, and other countries.

“The character of collective development emerging primarily is classically reflected in the constructions of some specialized parks.” According to some experts, now, Zhongguancun has Zhongguancun Software Park, DRC Industrial Design base, Zhongguancun Originality Pioneer Base, Beijing Digital Entertainment Industry Base and etc. The software park realized a sales volume of 11 billion Yuan in 2005, with the export of 100 million yuan, and 30 thousands of software employment. Industrial associating effect is mainly manifesting on the promoting effect of the high-tech services industry to the related industries, for example, the promoting impact from online games to the communication, IT industry, the media and publishing industries while digital TV on the communication, IT industry, and cultural originality industry.

The second quarter report about economy situation of the Zhongguancun Park in 2007 shows that the development of Zhongguancun high-tech services industry is rapid. High-tech services industry has gained a total revenue of 142.581 billion Yuan from January to May in 2007. The growth rate is up to 71.70% compared to the same period of last year, while that of manufacturing industry is only 8.69%, 63 percentage lower. This is the first time in record that the income of high-tech services industry has surpassed that of manufacturing industry.
